Frank Talk About Cancer

Cancer is the number two cause of death today in the United States. But in some societies that follow traditional diets, cancer remains far less common. One of these diets is the storied Mediterranean diet.

One of the major components of the Mediterranean diet is olive oil.

Of course, there’s a lot more to the Mediterranean diet than just olive oil: it’s typically high in other fruits and vegetables as well, and other fruits and vegetables have also been tied to lower rates of cancer.

But increasing evidence has come to light that olive oil itself may help to reduce cancer risk.

Olive Oil Reduces Cancer Rates in Some Studies

Cancer studies are tough to perform: Cancer usually results from hundreds of changes to cells through the years. Try to tell which factors over the past twenty years helped lead to your cancer, and you’ll drive yourself crazy.

But helpful studies can still be performed. Certain studies have found that:

  1. Olive oil has slowed breast cancer in rats.
  2. Polyphenols found in extra virgin olive oil reduced the impact of certain cells believed to cause breast cancer in humans.
  3. Rats fed olive oil showed half the colon cancer rate of rats fed safflower oil.
  4. Women who consumed three quarters of an ounce of olive oil each day had a 30% lower rate of ovarian cancer than the average woman.
  5. Mice whose skin was exposed to sunlight and then treated with extra virgin olive oil showed lower rates of skin cancer than mice who weren’t treated.

Cancer is an extremely serious disease, and we have a lot more for to learn about cancer, and about olive oil’s effects, if any, on cancer rates. But there are some good reasons out there to believe that extra virgin olive oil like Frank may help to reduce your risk of cancer.

How Antioxidants May Help Prevent Cancer

Because Frank has antioxidants, Frank may help to prevent cancer.

Cancer can be caused by damage to DNA caused by “free radicals.” Free radicals have an unpaired electron and want to either unload that electron or find a pair for it. When they take an electron from DNA, or unload one on DNA, that DNA becomes damaged. If the DNA gets damaged enough, it can start sending different messages to its cell and cause it to become cancerous.

Antioxidants can prevent this from happening, by hunting down free radicals and either giving them an electron or taking one away. Damage avoided.

Organic extra virgin olive oils like Frank have more antioxidants than any other vegetable oil. If antioxidants have the effects the National Cancer Institute says they may have, Frank may help reduce cancer risk.
